Erythropoietin (EPO), also known as erythrocyte stimulating factor, erythropoietin, is a human endogenous glycoprotein hormone that can stimulate red blood cell production. Hypoxia can stimulate the production of erythropoietin, recombinant human erythropoietin has long been used in clinical, for the treatment of renal insufficiency combined with anemia, acquired immune deficiency syndrome/AIDS itself or treatment caused anemia, anemia associated with malignant tumors and rheumatic anemia and other anemia.

Structure and function

Normal human body has a certain amount of erythropoietin, mainly produced by the kidney, a small amount from the liver. According to the source, it can be divided into endogenous and exogenous erythropoietin. The natural erythropoietin molecule includes a polypeptide part and a sugar chain part. The erythropoietin present in blood plasma is composed of 165 amino acids. The different types of EPO amino acid polypeptides are identical, with a molecular weight of 34kDa, and are linked by disulfide bonds to form four stable α helical structures, which is the spatial conformation necessary to maintain the biological activity of EPO. Erythropoietin is a colony-stimulating factor. Its physiological function is to bind to the surface receptors of erythroid progenitor cells, and promote the differentiation of erythroid directed stem cells into erythroblasts in bone marrow, the synthesis of hemoglobin by nucleated erythrocytes, and the release of endoclasts and erythrocytes in bone marrow.

Indication

1. Used for the treatment of anemia associated with renal insufficiency, anemia caused by acquired immune deficiency syndrome/AIDS itself or anemia caused by treatment, anemia associated with malignant tumors, anemia caused by rheumatism, chronic anemia of rheumatoid arthritis and severe parasitic disease, sickle cell anemia, etc.

2. For patients with repeated blood collection for storing autologous blood for elective surgery.

3. Used to prevent anemia.

4. It is suitable for patients with chronic renal failure and anemia, including patients on and without dialysis, to increase or maintain red blood cell levels and reduce blood transfusion. Erythropoietin can avoid dependence on blood transfusion, but can not replace emergency blood transfusion.

5. It can also be used for anemia caused by zidovudine; To improve the symptoms of anemia in patients with thalassemia or precocious anemia; It can accelerate the recovery of hematopoietic function after bone marrow transplantation. It can also be used for anemia caused by excessive aluminum load.
